Description: | There are an estimated 5000 abandoned mine sites in Ontario, many of them generating acidic run-off. They are the legacy of an era in which few constraints governed the search for minerals and little thought was given to site restoration. They are now the property, by default, of Ontario taxpayers. The passage of the Ontario Mining Act in 1991, and amended in 2000, marked the formal recognition in Ontario of the longevity and complexity of mine-related environmental problems. The only mine site that has ever been returned to the Ontario government, having undergone a process of remediation, is the South Bay Mine in Northwestern Ontario |
